What Can Others Do to Help?

Whether you are the parent, spouse, or friend, pregnant women need support.
Here are five things you can do:
  • Be Involved - go to her prenatal care visits with her. Help her embrace a healthy lifestyle including good food choices, exercise, smoke-free households, and the elimination of alcohol and drug use during pregnancy.
  • Inform yourself – read a book or watch videotapes about pregnancy, childbirth and becoming a parent. Use this information to offer suggestions to keep her healthy during pregnancy.
  • Be part of the plan – Talk about the baby. Discuss the future. How will it be raised? Where will the baby sleep? Prepare the coming home plan.
  • Be supportive – Support her decisions whether it is during childbirth or breastfeeding afterwards. Be there, offer comfort and relieve stress; remember it benefits both mom and baby.
  • Be Patient – Mood swings are common during pregnancy due to hormones fluctuations, anxiety, and worry of the responsibility of having a baby. Listen, be patient and remember pregnancy is temporary.
