Child Health & Disability Prevention (CHDP)

Gateway Process

What is the CHDP Gateway process?
The Child Health and Disability Prevention Program (CHDP) Program is a "Gateway" to provide access for over one million uninsured children to the Medi-Cal or the Healthy Families Program through an automated pre-enrollment process.

How does the CHDP Gateway PROCESS work?
Picture Flowchart: (English / Spanish)

Step 1: After speaking with the child’s parent/guardian to determine the client does not have insurance that covers a well child check, the provider’s office will use the Income Eligibility Determination Table to determine the child’s financial eligibility for Gateway.

-If a client has insurance or isn’t financially eligible, the provider bills accordingly or refers client to an appropriate provider.

-If client is eligible, the parent/guardian completes a CHDP Pre-Enrollment Application. Armenian, Cambodian, Chinese, English, Farsi, Hmong, Korean, Laotian, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese - If client does not have insurance, the parent/guardian completes a

Step 2: The CHDP Provider enters the information from the patient’s completed hard copy Pre-Enrollment Application into the Gateway Internet format or into the POS device format and submits’ for processing. An Immediate Need Eligibility Document will be returned for use by the client in accessing Medical Care for the month of the physical and the next month (temporary medical coverage).

Step 3: It is the responsibility of the Provider to give every client that receives full scope Medi-Cal through the Gateway a Medi-Cal/Healthy Family’s Joint Application, list of local Assistors, and explain to them that if they wish their child to continue to receive Medi-Cal they must complete the application and mail in.
