  County Aims For Better Health Through Six Days Of Workshops

This week is Public Health Week in Stanislaus County and several agencies are offering workshops and events.

Four agencies -- the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency, Department of Mental Health, Department of Environmental Resources and the YMCA of Stanislaus County -- have scheduled events. The lineup for the week:

Today: Mental health

All mental health seminars will be at Stanislaus Behavioral Health Center, 1501 Claus Road, Modesto. To register, call 558-8466.

  • "Suggestions for Improving Intimate Relationships," presented by therapist David Schroeder of Workplace Wellness, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the multipurpose room.
  • "Asking for What You Want," 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the multipurpose room.
  • "Burnout," presented by counselor Louise Gallagher, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the dining room. Call 558-4700 to register.

Tuesday: Chronic disease, injuries

Publication of Stanislaus County's Community Health Report Card and informational presentation at the Board of Supervisors meeting.

Introductory stop-smoking workshops at:

  • Emanuel Medical Center, 825 Delbon Ave., Turlock, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Conference Rooms D and E. Call 558-6053 to register.
  • Oak Valley Hospital boardroom, 350 S. Oak Ave., Oakdale, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call 558-6053.

Wednesday: Vulnerable populations

  • Senior health screenings. For information, contact Community Health Services, 558-7400.
  • Women, Infants and Children clinics will offer informational sessions on calcium consumption. For WIC recipients only. Call clinics for start times. In Modesto, 558-7377; Turlock, 664-8057; Salida, 558-6930.

Thursday: Communicable diseases

Information about hepatitis A, B and C will be available at locations throughout the county. The Health Services Agency's communicable diseases branch can answer questions and provide information, 558-5678.

Friday: Environmental health

"The Truth About Food Borne Illness," a presentation on safe food handling and preparation at the county Agricultural Center, Harvest Hall, 3800 Cornucopia Way, Modesto, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. To register, 525-6700.

Saturday: YMCA Healthy Kids Day

All events are at the YMCA of Stanislaus County, 2700 McHenry Ave., Modesto, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., including:

  • 5K fun run
  • One-mile family walk-run
  • Karate demonstration
  • Health screenings
  • Free YMCA tours
