We don't want to needle you about this, but it's not too late to get a flu
vaccination — even if you're a healthy 25-year-old. Monday, 450 people
lined up at the Stanislaus County Department of Health facility on Scenic
Drive to get a shot they hope will ward off all those miserable symptoms.
That's about 100 more than had been showing up each Monday as the county
(and everyone else) tried to come to grips with a vaccine shortage. So far,
the county has vaccinated 7,352 people, and the lines have never been long,
said Nancy Bancroft, a public health nurse in charge of the immunization
registry. Shots are available to anyone, Monday through Thursday from 8
a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for $15 for those who can afford it. The difference is
that now this offer includes those outside the high-risk categories (elderly,
those with chronic diseases and the very young). The offer is good until
the vaccine runs out. If it does, the county will order more. "We just
go by demand," Bancroft said. "If we need more vaccine, we'll
answer the call." |
