In an effort to protect Stanislaus County citizens from the West Nile
virus, the state will grant nearly $92,000 to the Turlock Mosquito Abatement
District.
The Turlock Mosquito Abatement District, which includes the West Side,
learned last week that it will receive nearly $92,000 from the state to
increase its mosquito- control efforts.
The Turlock-based mosquito control district will use the money to buy
a large pesticide sprayer, to increase overtime for staffers working at
mosquito hot spots and to buy pesticides.
“It will go a long ways in protecting the people in Stanislaus
County,” Jerry Davis, general manager of the Turlock Mosquito Abatement
District, said of the money while addressing state officials during a
roundtable discussion on West Nile virus in Modesto on July 28.
The money is part of the $12 million in one-time funds allocated in Gov.
Schwarzenegger’s budget to combat West Nile virus.
The state Department of Health Services released about $9 million of
that money this week to 75 local agencies to improve and expand mosquito
control across the state. Agencies were notified of the money July 27.
