A West Side man is Stanislaus County's first death as a result of West
Nile Virus.
The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency reported Tuesday that a
63-year-old man died as a result of West Nile.
The victim lived in the Patterson area, according to Jerry Davis, manager
of the Turlock Mosquito Abatement District.
The man's identity and other details were not released.
Also Tuesday, Stanislaus County Health Services announced three new human
cases of West Nile Virus.
The announcements came even as mosquito activity is beginning to slow down.
“People should still be cautious, “ Davis said. “We're
continuing to test mosquitos.”
West Nile is contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito, and
has claimed 16 lives this year.
More than 800 people have been infected statewide.
In Stanislaus County, there have been 85 confirmed human cases of West
Nile virus.
“West Nile virus infection has been documented in every zip code
within this county,” Davis said. “We continue to test and
spray. Activity has decreased, but the risk of being bitten by an infected
mosquito is still here.”
