FAMILIES AND BABIES DRUG CONFERENCE: The Perinatal Substance Abuse Coalition of Stanislaus County will hold its 19th annual Families, Babies and Drugs Conference on March 18 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 1150 Ninth St. The conference will provide information to help people understand the issues regarding the risk of addiction. It will emphasize the importance of doctor-patient contracts and random urine drug screening in the management of patients who are prescribed controlled substances. Participants will learn management techniques for patients born with drugs in their systems. Guest speakers will be Dr. Paul G. Kreis, talking about opioids and addiction, and registered nurse Lynn Browne-Wagner, speaking about drug abuse and its neonatal effect. The program is offered by Doctors Medical Center, which is accredited by the California Medical Association. Doctors who attend can report as much as six hours of credit toward the CMA certification of continuing medical education and the American Medical Association's Physician's Recognition Award. Registration and a continental breakfast are from 8 to 8:30 a.m. There will be 15 minutes of opening comments before sessions begin. LIONS CLUB CRAB FEED: The Modesto 500 Lions Club is having a crab feed Saturday at the Howard Training Center, 1424 Stonum Road (off Hatch Road) beginning at 6 p.m. The cost is $35 per person. There will be a raffle and silent auction. For tickets, call Jerry Cooper at 471-3265.

CANCER SUPPORT: The Writing Through Cancer program begins today. The free, 10-week series is part of the Complementary Therapy Program presented by Cancer Services of Memorial Medical Center. STOP SMOKING: The Health Services Agency will hold a Freedom From Smoking class to help people who smoke learn the skills it takes to quit permanently. The class is free and open to anyone who wants to quit smoking. The eight-session course will cover topics such as stress management, assertive communication and exercise skills to help participants succeed. The class begins today. Participants will meet Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Stanislaus County Learning Institute, 801 County Center III Court. For more information, call 558-5657.
