County Health Agency Celebrates International Flavor Of Its Volunteers

STANISLAUS COUNTY - For the very first time, the United Nations has dedicated 2001 as the International Year of the Volunteer. In the United States, National Volunteer Week is celebrated April 22 – 28.

In celebrating the cultural diversity of its volunteer staff, the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency (HSA) is holding a volunteer celebration lunch on April 24, from 12 noon – 2 p.m. in the Martin Conference Room of the Health Services Agency at 830 Scenic Drive in Modesto. Around 60 volunteers are expected to attend.

The celebration will have an international theme with festive decorations representing countries and cultures from around the world.

The cultural diversity of HSA volunteers is seen by the services they provide: translation services for county medical offices; work in the Public Health Refugee Clinic making phone calls to refugees in their native language; offer translation assistance in the Indigent Health Care Program; help in the Women, Infants and Children’s (WIC) program and in other other capacities throughout the HSA.

HSA volunteers assist in Turlock, Hughson, Ceres and Modesto locations and have provided over 435,000 hours of service since their founding in 1965. There are currently over 80 active volunteers serving over 25,000 hours each year.

Interview opportunities include Hispanic and Assyrian volunteers, the Volunteer president and the director of volunteer services.

Photo opportunities include volunteers at work in the HSA; decorating for the international theme luncheon at 10:00 a.m. on April 24; and the luncheon itself.

The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency (HSA) is an outpatient medical system with 9 medical offices located throughout Stanislaus County. The HSA also operates the Public Health Department, an Urgent Care Center and multiple programs serving over 400,000 patients and clients each year in Stanislaus County. The HSA also is in local partnerships for the MOMobile project and the Stanislaus Family Practice Residency Program. The HSA has extensive community health information available at its web site www.hsahealth.org
