County - It was the year the Titanic sank . . . 1912. It was also
the year that William Howard Taft was President, New Mexico and Arizona
became the 47th and 48th states, the first feature length film was shown
in America and the electric starter for cars was invented. And by the way,
it was the year the first Oreo cookie was created.
Some of this great history lives through seven volunteers at the Stanislaus
County Health Services Agency (HSA) who are over 90 years old and still
participate actively with the HSA Volunteers or as inactive members.
The Volunteers will be recognized at a special reception in the Martin
Conference Room of the Health Services Agency on Tuesday, February 26
at 2 p.m. with refreshments, special speakers, a presentation of certificates
and the re-dedication of the framed Alms House photograph in the HSA lobby.
The honorees include:
- Vivian Dow 22 years of service
- Lilly Kelly 15 years of service
- Ruth Kolody 19 years of service
- Dorothy Mattox 8 years of service
- Olen Miller 11 years of service
- Alicemae Walker 14 years of service
- Martha Zimmerman 24 years of service
The wooden Victorian-style Alms House stood on the main campus of today’s
Health Services Agency on Scenic Drive during the time the honorees were
born. The Alms House served as a source of health and encouragement for
people in Stanislaus County. Torn down in 1948, the Alms House was replaced
with buildings that are still on the main HSA campus.
The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency (HSA) is an outpatient medical
system with 9 medical offices located throughout Stanislaus County. The
HSA operates the Public Health Department, an Urgent Care Center and multiple
programs serving over 500,000 patients and clients each year in Stanislaus
County. The HSA also is in local partnerships for the MOMobile project
and the Stanislaus Family Practice Residency Program. The HSA has extensive
community health information available at its web site www.hsahealth.org
