Stanislaus County Public Health Department Cancels Senior Flu Clinics

Public Health staff will conduct limited pediatric flu clinics to be announced at a future date

Stanislaus County – The Public Health Department of the Health Services Agency of Stanislaus County is canceling all of their previously scheduled senior flu clinics for Fall 2004 as a result of the national flu vaccine shortage. Chiron Corporation, which was scheduled to supply between 46-48 million doses of vaccine to the United States, was the source of vaccine to be used at the senior clinics.

The Public Health Department is planning to receive a limited number of pediatric doses of vaccine produced by Aventis Pasteur and will be conducting several pediatric flu vaccine clinics at dates to be announced. Pediatric clinics will be available to low-income children between 6 months and 18 years who are high-risk or all low-income children ages 6 months to 23 months.

The public is asked to contact their private physician or health plan to check on availability of flu vaccine.

The Stanislaus County Public Health Department has a recorded flu hotline at
(209) 558-8872 with information on vaccination and helpful tips for flu season. The hotline will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Frequent handwashing with soap and water, the use of an alcohol-based gel hand sanitizer, and covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or shirt sleeve when coughing and sneezing are still some of the most important ways the public can protect themselves from spreading or contracting a variety of illnesses such as the flu.
