County – Lloyd Douglass, manager of the East Side Mosquito
Abatement District has announced mosquito counts from traps that were set
before and after the spraying of the Monday, August 15, zone 1 in Modesto
(the area bounded by Standiford, Prescott, Briggsmore, McHenry).
Six traps were set before and six traps set after the spraying.
Four of the traps that had five or fewer mosquitoes before the spraying
of zone 1, came back with 50% fewer mosquitoes or the mosquitoes were
eliminated.
Two of the other traps results have caused concern.
The trap in the area of Scott Avenue and Carver Road had 10 mosquitoes
before the spraying and 10 mosquitoes after.
The trap in the area of Montclair Drive and Carver Road had 25 mosquitoes
before the spraying and 26 mosquitoes after the spraying.
This could be because of spray conditions or trap locations. The results
could also be the result of a backyard breeding source. The East Side
Mosquito Abatement District will begin checking backyards in these areas
beginning Thursday, August 18, 2005 and they are asking for the public’s
cooperation. The impacted areas will be resprayed by the mosquito district
before the end of this week.
Mosquitoes from the traps collected and reported on today will now be
analyzed to see if any of them test positive for West Nile virus. Those
results will be reported on Thursday afternoon.
The East Side and Turlock Mosquito Abatement Districts continue to ask
Stanislaus County residents to check their homes for backyard breeding
sources to help protect the public.
