Stanislaus
County, Calif., June 23, 2006 – Nearly one third of Stanislaus
County’s fifth, seventh, and ninth-graders are overweight, according
to the California Physical Fitness Test administered by schools each year.
Recognizing the need to take local action against the obesity epidemic,
the HEART Coalition of Stanislaus County, along with other community partners,
are hosting Project Healthy Kids Modesto at Robertson Road Elementary School.
Project Healthy Kids Modesto is a weeklong obesity prevention and nutrition
camp, which teaches children about nutrition, physical activity, self-esteem
building, and most importantly how to have fun with food and fitness.
Some of the activities include a rock climbing wall, a martial arts demonstration,
a gymnastics demonstration, a farmers market and a baseball lesson from
the Modesto Nuts. There will be 50 children ages 5-10 from Robertson Road
Elementary School participating in this camp, which starts Monday, June
26th.
The camp will promote awareness and prevention of the increasing rates
of obesity in children. These goals are an important part of the HEART
Coalition’s mission, which is to reduce heart-disease risk factors
in order to improve the health and quality of life for Stanislaus County
residents.
“It is great to see this small group of committed community members
come together to raise awareness of the obesity epidemic,” said
Coalition member, Dr. Vance Roget, who is acting as the Camp Director.
“We hope this camp will encourage participants and community members
to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes.”
The HEART Coalition of Stanislaus County, coordinated by the Health Services
Agency, was established in 1999, with representation from over 15 local
agencies. The major sponsors of this event include Save Mart Supermarkets,
Health Net, Valley Heart Associates, Sutter Gould Medical Foundation,
and Doctors Medical Center.
