Stanislaus
County - Amanda Crews, M.D., joins the staff of Turlock Medical
Office in Turlock beginning Tuesday, August 1, 2006. A recent
graduate of the Stanislaus Family Practice Residency Program,
Dr. Crews will share a practice with Susie Wenstrup, M.D.,
Mitchell Cohen, D.O., and Kathleen Kearns, M.D.
While she will provide general family health services in
the clinic, Dr. Crews is especially interested in women’s
and adolescent health. “I also like longitudinal care,
which means taking care of many generations of the same
family over their lifetimes,” she says. “Even
during my residency, where I had a more limited interaction
with patients, I had families where I took care of several
generations.”
As she neared completion of the three-year internship and
residency program, Dr. Crews was encouraged by her advisor
to remain in the area and work at the health clinic. “It
will be a challenge but a good place to learn,” she
says. “A lot of these patients have nowhere else to
go. You’re their only option so it’s rewarding
to provide them with care they wouldn’t get otherwise.”
"Turlock Medical Office is very excited to have a
physician of Dr. Crews’ reputation join our clinic,”
says Dr. Wenstrup, medical director of the Turlock Medical
Office of the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency.
“In her residency she has demonstrated a commitment
to patient care and advocacy. We are pleased that her practice
will provide residents in our area increased opportunity
to receive quality medical care close to home."
Dr. Crews is a graduate of Boston University and Boston
University School of Medicine. She set her sights on a medical
career at a young age. “I always knew I wanted to
be a doctor. In high school I did shadowing at a local hospital
and went to college with plans to go to medical school.
I feel lucky that I had a goal and could work toward it.
It took a long time – 11 years – but was worth
it.”
Although raised in Virginia, Dr. Crews knew she wanted
to practice in California. “Family medicine on the
West Coast is very different from the East Coast. You are
a lot more independent here and your scope of practice is
wider. On the East Coast, medicine in general is more specialty
driven.” In addition to starting a new job, Dr. Crews
was married last month. She and her husband enjoy hiking,
camping and music.
Dr. Crews will have hospital admitting privileges at Emanuel
Medical Center in Turlock and other nearby community hospitals.
Turlock Medical Office is located at 800 Delbon Ave. in
Turlock. The phone number is (209) 664 - 8000.
